Spine Injection Procedure

This is done in the hospital. It is a very simple procedure but it has to be done with great accuracy and precision. Your spine is the most important part of your body and hence, great care is taken to do this procedure safely. 

You will need to come to the hospital starved for at least 6 hours.

The spine injection is done under sedation so that you do not feel any pain during the actual spine injection. X-ray guidance is used so that the spine injection is given at the most accurate location. This ensures safety and accuracy.

You will be discharged from the hospital 2-4 hours after the procedure. 

Recovery & Aftercare

Once you wake up from the sedation, you will find a significant improvement in your pain. After a nice cup of tea, you will be allowed home once you have fully recovered from the spine injection procedure. You will be able to walk almost immediately.

You should not drive for 12-24 hours after the procedure.

As the numbing solution numbs the nerve and you will feel no pain. Occasionally, your leg can become numb or weak from the injection. But this settles in a few hours.

Why do you need spinal injections?

How painful is a spinal injection?

Spinal injection procedure is painless but you may feel some pressure during the injection. Spinal injections are virtually painless since the procedure is done under local anaesthetic. When the local anaesthetic wears off, you may experience some discomfort where the needles were placed.

 

Although pain relief with the caudal epidural steroid injections generally occurs within 3 – 5 days, some patients experience improvement & pain relief right after the injection! You will be watched for 15 to 20 minutes after the injection before going home.

Are spinal injections safe?

Spinal injections are generally safe procedures. If complications occur, they are usually mild and self-limited. However, like with any treatment procedure, some of the common risks with epidural steroid injections are:

 

1) Infection:

This is rare but there is an increased risk in skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema. The rate is less than 1 in 1000 injections

 

2) Bleeding:

People who take medications to ‘thin their blood’ will be advised to stop these medications at least a week in advance of the procedure for safety.

 

3) Steroid facial flushing:

A temporary side effect with flushing of the face and chest, with warmth and an increase in temperature for several days. Settles down very quickly.

 

4) Anxiety or vasovagal:

Caused due to the stress of the procedure and is not life-threatening. 1 in 100 patients do have such episodes and it settles very quickly.

 

5) Menstrual changes.

 

6) Water retention.

How long do spinal injections last?

Spinal injections tend to provide temporary relief from pain, and the effects could last from one week up to one year. It is especially beneficial for a patient suffering from acute back and/or leg pain.

Can you drive after a spinal injection?

You should not drive for the first 12-24 hours after your spinal injection procedure. You may experience mild soreness at the injection site(s) for 24–48 hours. You are advised to take the next day off work as you had intravenous sedation.

 

You can return to normal life with gentle activity right after, and you can return to an active lifestyle within 3 – 5 days. If your back pain persists or is worse, you may need a few days off work. There are no limitations for work if your pain settles after a day.
